These things made me smile

Funny things this week:

I had a tall glass of orange juice, about 16oz in all. Scott had drank about half of it but I still had about 8 oz left. Tate asked if she could have some and I told her yes. She went out of the room to get the drink and came back with the glass. It had about 1/2 an ounce left in the bottom. I said, "Hey you drank it all!" She replied (very seriously), "No, I left you some!". I enjoyed my one tiny sip after I laughed!

Cole put the candles on his birthday cake and here's the funny part (at least to me), he put on surprise re-lighting candles...on his own cake! When I asked him, he said that he knew they were re-lighting candles. Funny kid!

Tate had a bad dream and Scott brought her into our bed. He asked her what her bad dream was about and she said she dreamed there were bad guys here. He said, "There's no bad guys here" and she replied, "They were from California!!!"
We're not sure where she got that!

"Come what may...and love it"

Today in Relief Society we had a wonderful lesson. Part of the lesson focused on being able to laugh through difficult times. The talk used for the lesson was by Elder Wirthlin and he talked about how his mother would tell him "come what may...and love it". He then added, "I think she may have meant that every life has peaks and shadows and times when it seems that the birds don’t sing and bells don’t ring. Yet in spite of discouragement and adversity, those who are happiest seem to have a way of learning from difficult times, becoming stronger, wiser, and happier as a result."

I know laughter is the best medicine in my life. When I get overwhelmed by the mounds of laundry and dishes and the kids fighting, I find that laughter can be a really good friend. I often have to remind myself to not take life too seriously. On my counter I have a quote by Gordon B. Hinkley that says, "In all of living have much fun and laughter. Life is to be enjoyed, not just endured."

I am so lucky in my life to have a fun husband to laugh with. We both enjoy our crazy home with a dose of laughter. For example, yesterday we tried to get a photo taken of Tess. She is 5 months old now and smiles a lot. She almost sits up and is always wide-eyed with wonder about life around her. We were in Billings to attend the temple and I had scheduled and appointment with Kiddie Kandids for photos. We arrived and Tess was in a great mood, happy and smiling. They were running behind so we waited about 45 minutes for our turn. When our time arrived Tess took one photo and then cried and fussed. I could not get her to calm down. She is always so calm and easy and not fussy at all. I gave up and we finally had to just leave. It was definitely one of those frustrating moments in life that Scott and I just had to laugh about to keep from going nuts!

I have been blessed with a fun mother who has always brought smiles and laughter into my life. When my family gets together we love to tell old stories about the funny things that happened while we were growing up. Usually the stories center around events that could have been less than joyful. We didn't have a lot of money, my mom cared for my aging grandparents (who had Alzheimer's disease), my parents divorced, so we definitely had our share of heartaches and problems but my Mom has always maintained her wonderful sense of humor. I really thank her for that example in my life.

When I was listening to the lesson at church today I was reminded of a time several years ago when my kids were small. I was going to college and I was working on my computer doing my homework. Cora came into my room and asked if she could make a peanut butter & jelly sandwich. She was six and perfectly able to make her own sandwich, so I told her yes. Alyssa (5) came in a few moments later and asked if she could make a sandwich. I also told her yes. Then 2 year old Cody came in and asked if he could make a sandwich. I was distracted and annoyed and just said yes, but I hadn't really heard his question. Shortly thereafter I found Cody covered from head to toe in peanut butter and jelly. I could have been frustrated and upset but I just laughed and pulled out my camera and took photos. I still laugh when I see those photos.

Sometimes laughter is what we need and sometimes we need to just look for the positive even when there doesn't seem to be any. Tonight Tate was reaching for a can of Disney Princess Soup and a can of Coconut Milk fell from above and landed on her face, right on her mouth, and cut her. It hurt her a great deal and she was bleeding. I started to bemoan why this had happened to her but then I counted my blessing that she was not hurt worse. Luckily, she didn't split her lip or have any teeth knocked out and with some love, an ice pack and some time, she felt better.

My ramblings today may be long but the overall message of it is to choose to be happy. Elder Wirthlin said "The next time you’re tempted to groan, you might try to laugh instead. It will extend your life and make the lives of all those around you more enjoyable."

I agree with him ...and his mother.

I won't set that goal again in 2010!

It's almost the end of January and my New Year's resolutions are not going very strong. In fact, I haven't even started on them!

I have been thinking a lot about how this is the last year of this decade. I was thinking back to my life in January of the year 2000. I was living in California and still married to my ex-husband with three kids and one cat and one dog. (Cora was 5, Alyssa was 4 and Cody had just turned 2). Needless to say, my life has changed signifigantly in the last decade. I don't know what will happen in the next decade but I do know what I'd like to accomplish.

Many of the goals I have now I also had back at the start of January 2000 and unfortunately I still have not accomplished them yet! I would like to use this last year of the decade to accomplish those decade-old goals and then plan NEW goals for the next decade. Hopefully it won't take me a decade to accomplish the new ones!

In The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, Aslan (a fictional lion that represents Jesus Christ) , tells Lucy that we can't know what would've happened but he says, “But anyone can find out what will happen”. Well, I'm not going to dwell on pointless "what if's" about un-accomplished goals from years ago but rather focus on what will happen if I do them now.

My first four goals:

1. I've chewed my fingernails since I was a little girl. My older daughters now bite their nails because I did it while they were growing up. I want to grow my nails. I don't want my little girls to bite theirs and I want to be an inspiration to my older girls to kick the habit, too.

2. I want to lose weight. I have kept 10 pounds from every kid I've given birth to. I have about 50 extra pounds on me. I want to lose at least half of that by the end of the year but I am going to eventually lose all of it!

3. I want to keep my journal. I want to keep a journal for myself, because I have a poor memory. I think a journal can be a great tool for venting about life, preserving what we cherish, learning about yourself, and reflecting. You can see change and growth and record blessings from the Lord. I also want to keep a journal for my children and grandchildren. I think it would be wonderful to read my Grandma's journal, but she did not write one. She wrote lots of stories and poetry and when I read those I try to understand her at a younger age. I knew her in her later years because my Mom was born when my Grandma was 39, and I was born when Grandma was 65. When I really got to know and love her she was already into her 70's. Actually, I would love to read a journal from any of my grandparents or great-grandparents. So, I plan to write my journal as if I am writing it to some adult version of my future grandchild or great-grandchild that I have yet to know and love.

4. I want to read my scriptures everyday. I find time for everything else, I think I can find time for this!

Maybe you have old goals you want to accomplish before we all get to the new decade. Maybe we can work on this together and encourage and cheer on each other. If you want to add your goals then just leave a comment on this blog.
